How Much Do Americans Pay In Property Taxes?

Owning a home in America is never truly “free”. You can pay off your mortgage, yet you will still have to pay a tax bill for your state and local government yearly.  In fact, local and state governments depend on this tax feature as it accounts for 32% of their overall collections.

What is the average property tax bill in America? This answer was found in an article by the Wall Street Journal as they examined people moving to different states to avoid high property taxes.

The average property tax bill in the U.S. in 2018 was about $3,500, according to Attom Data Solutions, a real-estate data firm. But many residents in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and California had been deducting well over $10,000 a year. In Westchester County, N.Y., the average property-tax bill was more than $17,000, the highest in the country.
